Incident and Safety (Dashboard)

The Incident and Safety Dashboard is an out-of-the-box SharePoint dashboard for EHS managers who need the safety picture across sites without waiting for a monthly report. The data lives in a standard SharePoint incident log, and Microsoft 365 Copilot turns that list into a single interactive page - a safety overview header, root cause and area rankings, a severity breakdown, a reported by panel, a weekly incident trend, and the full incident table. Filters across the top redraw every card at once, so the same page answers the operations director's question and the site safety officer's.

  • Filter row with search plus Site, Department, Severity, Type, and Status, timeframe buttons for thirty days, ninety days, year to date, or all dates, and a live count of reports shown
  • Safety overview header carrying total incidents with the change against the prior period, the most severe incident on record, and counters for open investigations, average days lost, and reportable count
  • Share chips summarising the leading departments and sites as a count and a percentage of everything currently in scope
  • Incidents by root cause and incidents by area as ranked bar lists, each row giving the count and its share of the total
  • Severity breakdown card leading with high-severity incidents, a month-by-month mini bar column behind it, and average days lost and injury rate underneath
  • Reported by as a ranked panel of the most frequent reporters, each with a severity mix bar and a frequent reporter badge, next to a weekly incident trend line and a bar splitting closed, open, and regulator-reportable share
  • Recent incidents table with all seventeen columns, severity and status badges, and site shortcuts down the left that filter the whole page at once
  • Replaces the monthly safety pack and the manual chart refresh that goes with it
  • Puts the most severe incident and the open investigation count where they cannot be scrolled past
  • Shows where and when incidents cluster, so a site visit can be timed rather than scheduled
  • Makes reporting behaviour visible by person, which is how a quiet area gets noticed
  • Turns a log the safety team already maintains into reporting, with no new system to buy or roll out
  • Names no injured party and holds no medical detail beyond an injury category, so it can be shared across the business
  • Opens in any browser and can be embedded directly into a SharePoint page
  • Build Method: Copilot Dashboard
  • Chart Types: KPI card, Bar chart, Sparkline, Area chart, Stacked bar chart, Table
What is this safety dashboard built with?

It is built on a standard SharePoint incident log, with Microsoft 365 Copilot generating the dashboard page from that list. There is no EHS platform to buy and nothing to license beyond Microsoft 365. The charts, filters, and tables all live on one page that can be embedded in a SharePoint site – the kind of clean, maintainable reporting Greg Zelfond builds for safety teams.

What is included on the safety dashboard?

A safety overview header with total incidents, the most severe incident, open investigations, average days lost, and reportable count. Below it sit incidents by root cause and by area, a severity breakdown with monthly bars, injury rate, a reported by panel, a weekly incident trend, a closed against open share bar, and a full incident table. Filters cover site, department, severity, type, status, and timeframe.

Where does the dashboard data come from?

A single SharePoint list with seventeen columns – incident ID, date reported, date occurred, site, area, incident type, severity, reported by, department, description, root cause category, injury, days lost, investigation status, corrective action, closed date, and whether it is reportable to a regulator. Most safety teams already keep a version of this log somewhere.

Does the dashboard refresh automatically from the SharePoint list?

This example carries its data with it, so it opens instantly and works offline, and it is refreshed by regenerating the page from the current list. When a live-refreshing view is the requirement instead, the same numbers can be charted with the Quick Chart web part directly on a SharePoint page, or with Power BI when scheduled refresh is needed.

Should we use Copilot, the Quick Chart web part, or Power BI?

It depends on how much you need. The Quick Chart web part is the lightest option – one chart, pointed at a list, no setup. A Copilot-generated dashboard suits a full page with filters and several linked charts that move together. Power BI earns its place when data volumes are large, sources need joining, or row-level security and scheduled refresh matter.

Can Greg build this dashboard for our organization?

Yes – this is exactly the kind of work Greg Zelfond does. As an independent SharePoint consultant and Microsoft MVP, he sets up the underlying list, shapes the columns so the charts are worth drawing, and builds the dashboard around the questions your leadership actually asks rather than the ones the data happens to answer.
